At Duke Duets: Partnerships That Move the World Forward, Duke faculty, students, and alumni shared how Duke’s interdisciplinary approach to research, education, and knowledge in the service of society is moving the world forward.
Duke Duet Gary Bennett A.M.’99, Ph.D.’02 and Michele G. Lanpher ’10, A.M.’14 spoke at Duke Forward in New York City about how their partnership through Duke Global Health Institute is effectively using mobile technology to fight obesity in the U.S. and around the world.
Gary Bennett is the Bishop-MacDermott Family Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at Duke University. He directs the Duke Global Digital Health Science Center and the Duke Obesity Prevention Program. Bennett's research program designs, tests, and disseminates digital health obesity treatments for the primary care setting. He developed the interactive obesity treatment approach (iOTA), which has been tested in a range of populations, both domestically and abroad. He has authored more than 100 papers on the social determinants of obesity and the effectiveness of obesity intervention strategies in high-risk populations.
Bennett has a Ph.D. in clinical health psychology from Duke and completed a residency at Duke University Medical Center prior to postdoctoral studies in social epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health. Prior to joining Duke in 2009, Bennett served on the faculties of the Harvard School of Public Health and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
Michele (Shelley) G. Lanpher is a fifth-year doctoral student in clinical psychology at Duke University. She is advised by Gary Bennett and is a member of the Duke Obesity Prevention Program and the Duke Global Digital Health Science Center. Lanpher’s research interests include designing and evaluating behavioral obesity interventions that use digital health tools. Her dissertation will examine self-monitoring behavior for weight loss using a smartphone app. Lanpher has co-authored publications on the topics of health literacy, depression, e-Health interventions among racial/and ethnic minorities, and nutrition information on restaurants’ websites.
She received the Obesity Society’s master’s thesis award for her work reviewing technology-based interventions for weight loss. Lanpher is currently completing a clinical practicum at the Durham VA Medical Center. She has previously trained at Duke Cancer Institute, Duke Cognitive-Behavioral Research Treatment Clinic, and the Duke Psychology Clinic. As a Duke senior, she received the Karl E. Zener Award, the top psychology honors thesis award, based on her work evaluating the positive psychological effects of volunteering in the DukeEngage program. She played on Duke women’s club basketball team and continues to play intramural basketball and soccer.
Duke Forward, a seven-year, comprehensive fundraising campaign, aims to raise more than $3.25 billion by June 30, 2017. It supports priorities across Duke's 10 schools, Duke Health, and a range of university programs, and initiatives.
